ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE:  McDOUGLE ELEMENTARY

In the fall of 2007 local potter David Gould led the Artists@Work Program at McDougle Elementary School with another potter Debbie Englund and art instructor Janet Oldham.  McDougle 3rd and 4th graders created "Visionary Self-Portrait Face Jugs" that reflected the personal characteristics and qualities of the artists.  As the newest generation of artists working in the North Carolina face jug tradition, the students learned about the history of pottery in North Carolina, the arts as a profession, and recognized their own skills and goals as well.  Parents and arts commissioners volunteered as in-class docents to assist the artists at work.  The face jugs were completed in December of 2007 and displayed at the school library before returning home with the artists. 

From January through May of 2008 a photographic display of all 126 face jugs was on exhibit at Kidzu Children's Museum in downtown Chapel Hill.  The photographic display was then permanently installed at McDougle Elementary School in June of 2008, in the main hallway to the left of the reception desk.
